Georges Floyd: Jury finds Derek Chauvin guilty of murder

A US jury has found a former police officer guilty of murder over the death of African-American George Floyd on a Minneapolis street last year.

Derek Chauvin, 45, was filmed kneeling on Mr. Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes during his arrest last May, which caused his death. The video was widely watched over nations and was found enough to spark protests agains racism and excessive use of force by Police.

Yesterday Chauvin was announced guilty on many charges levels: Second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter. His bail was immediately revoked, and chauvin was placed in custody; sentencing is likely to happen in two months where he could spend decades in jail.

In Minnesota, second-degree murder can reach a sentence of 40 years in prison. Third-degree is usually punishable by up to 25 years. With manslaughter, it can also reach 10 years in prison.

American are now waiting to see if this conviction in Georges Floyd’s killing will spur politicians to reform policing and eradicate systemic racism. Activists say the work on racial justice is far from over.
